Project chairs

Here they are, two old chairs. Or to be more accurate, one whole chair as the other one is in 8 separate pieces. My plan for last year and a half has been to fix them. Now I finally got inspired. I originally bought them  from huuto.net (www.huuto.net) with good price as they were not in perfect condition and I knew they were both in need for some fixing.

They were both varnished dark brown and the surface was in bad shape already. Upholstery was neither our style nor properly done.  And paddings didn't practically excist so they both needed to be replaced with new materials.

The project started by removing upholstery and paddings. There was only a very thin layer of seaweed left as a padding and even without any lining. The upholstery fabric and the whole technique it was earlier fixed were not done correctly - even I understood this.

After this first step I gently opened all the loose joints of the other chair and started sanding the wooden pieces. Under the dark brown varnish I discovered this really nice light coloured wood which looks much better and more natural & original. I'm planning to use oil wax to keep this original colour. I'm no expert with old furniture but for sure the result should be better than before.

The other chair which at the moment is in 8 pieces is going to be more challenging for me. Luckily there is a carpenter (my sister) in my family. A phone call to her and the online helpdesk is open. She gave me good tips for choosing right glue for the joints and also ideas how to renew the paddings etc. I felt much more confident about the whole project.

Next thing is to get glue, oil wax, some tools (clamps) and all the necessary materials for paddings and upholstery. The style of fabric is still open. Maybe something with yellow and checked or striped. Something simple and for everyday use. We'll see what I'll end up with.

If these two chairs succeed the next step is to fix three more. They are more or less same style but without any paddings and upholstery. They are all painted several times and look untidy. My plan is to paint them all white unless I'll find nice colour of wood under all those paint layers.

Promise to post some photos as this project move on.

Butterfly recycled

While I was tidying up and fixing new supports for our red currant bushes earlier last spring I found some old metal supports. They were lying there under the bushes on the ground and were covered with rust. First I was about to throw them away but then decided to make this butterfly decoration instead. There was enough material for two and now these rusty butterflies live in one of the garden's flower beds.

Flowers blooming lately

Some flowers which are blooming right now in the garden of Villa Hattarala.

The last one is Hydrangea paniculata 'Mustila', one of my favourites. I planted it this summer and it already blooms - I'm so proud of it.

Paving slabs

Today I took the slabs out of the moulds. Both succeeded to be positive surprises. Especially the one with coins look super nice.

I also did two new ones. With these I decided not to use upside-down technique. I thought placing shells would be easier this way. For the other one I used some marbles.

Gardening - my definition

Enter?
Exit?
Gardening by Webster Encyclopedia:

1. The act of cultivating a garden
2. The work of art of a gardener

So we are talking about gardening. I, you, we. People who love it and sometimes even hate it. Yes, there is no love without hate or hate without love. And hey, honestly, each one of us are in a war in our own gardens. The enemy? Time, weather, a bug or an army of them, dandelions, never ending dreams and plans and to-do-lists... But then, without the enemy what's left? Peaceful and quiet eternity? Enjoyment? Future without surprises? Pleasure? Stability of beauty...?

I choose love AND hate.

My gardening is not just cultivating the plot. Garden for me is like life itself. It is full of different periods, happenings, corners, atmospheres, responsibilities, rewards, births and deaths, communication, encounters. And I do not mean only the flowers and other plants. I mean the wholeness. The space. To be part of it. To be and live in it. With it. In other words: I want to extend my living space from inside the house to outside by gardening my garden. And remembering these two spaces are different yet similar.

Halfway inside

When I enter this outside space called garden, I want my enemies to accept me and me to accept them. Gardening is like a journey into a strange culture and I am a turist wanting to learn to know that culture better and even learn something new from it - take something back home with me. I want to have a role in my garden. Equal role. I want to take risks. I want to try and do things my way and learn the language of my garden. Speak it. And at the same time I'm trying to remember that this world is not perfect as we understand the word. In the garden I can't act as a superior being or otherwise my gardening experience will collapse. First steps in a strange culture has to be taken with respect.

Art of gardening. Work. Sweat. Success. Disaster. Starting all over again. Continuous observation. Adaptation. Art comes from a signature - my signature. I need to leave my footsteps there, as I don't want to be just somebody. I want this garden to remember me as I remember it. This is also my living environment and I want others to recognize it. I want to try new things, make inventions, use craftsmanship to create something interesting and personal. All this is possible if I am ready to work and make sacrifices and be humble in front of my garden.

Art

And remember, garden and gardening do need care. If you don't care, what is the use of having one - or do you enjoy sitting there on a garden chair watching the chain reaction of birth and death. Just sitting there and then one day noticing you no longer excist for your garden. Noticing it has forgotten you.

Signature

For me gardening is living. It's part of my life today, tomorrow. And as I love (and hate) my life so do I love gardening. Hope one day I can truly say: I had a good life and did my best with my gardening.

This n' that on a sunny Monday

Cherries are getting ready in the garden. They had this bright red colour on them during the last few days and now the tree looks like decorated with tiny little fire balls. I tasted one. Not really sweet yet but tasty anyway. Maybe I should hang some cd's or other shiny things there to keep birds out from this delicious dining table.

And then the lilies... Don't really know how they are so big. The strong orange coloured flowers seems almost unreal while they shine in the bright sunlight. Height of these beauties reach 1,5 meters and each have like 20 flowers. If only I could name them for real. Until that I'll call them 'Lilies Spectacularis'.

Today it was not only beautiful things in the garden. Had to do some masculine work as well to keep up my reliability. Our lawn-mower said "psfiyy" last week and hasn't woken up since. Luckily there is a repair shop (Flexo Power) for them just around the corner. Our sick machine got a ride to hospital. The mechanician said some strange words to me of which I hardly understood any. But he promised I could have my friend back home safe and sound later this week. Well, later this week meant like 3 hours in practice. Good, friendly and fast service I would say. And the machine worked nicely and the lawn got trimmed.

After doing some drawings and plans for an outdoor garden kitchen and green house combination I decided to clean a couple of those old window frames we bought last week. Took old fixing parts out and brushed dust and dirt off. If only I could decide how the whole 'building' should look like. My ideas and plans tend to change all the time. But are we in a hurry with this? No, this will be a master project for next spring. Winter months can be spend for making proper plans and calculations. Want it to be well done and carefully planned.

Green House of Botanical Garden in Helsinki

Inside the house our kitchen chopping board needed some cleaning and new oil on it. It hasn't been done for a while and the board was looking a bit grey and heavyly used. First some deep grinding with sandpaper P40 (know it's a bit rough, but as the surface was in a really bad condition...) and then with P100. Final touch was made with steel wool, grade 5. These three steps made it look pretty good. Some knife marks remained but who cares. Dust off and then some Osmo colour top oil (oil wax for wooden tables and boards in kitchen) on. Now just need to let it dry for a day to see if another layer of wax is needed. Looks almost like new already.

And just not to get too lazy I made a pair of concrete paving slabs. We still need 7 of them to finish our chess pavement next to the entrance. We started this project last summer together with our neighbour and haven't yet finished it - one day we will. So after this pair only 5 left. This time the other slab will have foreign coins on it and the other some glass pearls. As I use this upside-down technique with these slabs it will be exciting to see the result ones they are ready and taken out from the moulds. Hope they look fine and original. Our idea is to make each plate different (for chequered paving we use half self-made and half ready-made). Don't know yet how the rest of the slabs will look like. Will show you photos after the project is ready. The wooden moulds are self-made and measure 40x40 cm. I used the same concrete mixture S100 as with the small stones I made earlier this week. To make concrete stronger I used a piece of metal net inside both slabs. Now these two surprise pieces of art are there in the garden, covered with plastic to make them dry slowly.

It was a busy, sunny, summer day here at Villa Hattarala!

Changes

Dear friends and strangers.

I started this blog about one week ago and have noticed a great deal of foreign visitors since. This makes me super HAPPY!

My story is about gardening and everyday life in a pink, wooden house here in Finland, which both might be of interest to all foreign readers as well. Therefore I decided to switch my brains and my fingertips in English. This I find challenging as my language skills aren't perfect. But as I often think; not many things are really (and don't even need to be).

Starting today I will try to write as much as possible in English. And please, do forgive me if sometimes I temporarily use my native language or otherwise use some strange expressions. Here in Villa Hattarala even the language used can be of a strange kind.

If ever you feel like asking me something or want to make a comment, please do so. After all, I am here for you.

Dear readers, welcome to my "not-so-perfect-world" here at Villa Hattarala.

Betonikivien valamista

TARVIKKEET

Säkillinen kuivabetonia
Vettä
Saavi
Talikko
Pakastusrasioita
Kauha
Sivellin

Vaikka ihan pienelle alueelle edes, pliis!

Ikkunoita emme siis Loviisasta saaneet, mutta toki meillä oli varasuunnitelma niiden suhteen jo valmiina. Paluu Villa Hattaralaan, jossa meitä jo odottikin naapurimme tuttava.

Amppeleina toimii metalliset lyhdyt, joista on "hatut" poistettu. Uusien pelargonioiden istutuksen yhteydessä sain samalla vihdoinkin tehdyksi amppeleihin reunukset.

Asioita, joita koen puutarhassa.
Juttuja, joihin tartun talossa.
Ihanuuksia, joihin törmään Porvoossa.
